What is Golden Hour? | Ottawa Family Photographer

Updated: Mar 1

Golden hour, also known as magic hour, is the optimal time for photography. It provides that dreamy look and gooey sun—something I absolutely love.

During this time, the sun is typically lower on the horizon. This creates perfect directional light with long, soft shadows. It’s the most ideal natural backdrop you could ask for.

When Does Golden Hour Happen?

Golden hour occurs shortly after sunrise or before sunset. The sun is softer, casting a beautiful golden light. Personally, I prefer shooting during the evening golden hour. Let’s be honest—who wants to wake up at 6 AM for a photoshoot?

However, golden hour lasts for only a short period. That’s why timing is everything. After years of practice, I’ve learned exactly when to schedule my sessions.

Why Choose Golden Hour for Your Photos?

I am a light chaser. That’s right! I always follow the sun, keeping track of when it sets and testing out the best times for sessions. When you schedule an outdoor session with me, the timing is based on the sunset for that particular day.

Did you know that sunset times change daily? In the summer, golden hour is much later in the evening. However, in the fall, it occurs much earlier. By November, it can be as early as 2:30 PM!

While I wish I could guarantee the sunset for every shoot, I can’t. But chances are, the sun will peek out just as it dips below the clouds later in the evening—and from experience, it usually does.

The Magic of Lighting in Photography

Lighting is crucial in photography. It can transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary. The golden hour provides a unique quality of light that enhances colors and adds warmth to images.

The Benefits of Shooting During Golden Hour

  1. Soft Shadows: The low angle of the sun creates long, soft shadows. This adds depth and dimension to your photos.

  2. Warm Tones: The golden light casts a warm glow, making skin tones appear more flattering. This is especially beneficial for portraits.

  3. Dynamic Backgrounds: The sky during golden hour often features stunning colors, from soft pinks to vibrant oranges. This adds an artistic flair to your photos.

  4. Natural Highlights: The golden hour light creates beautiful highlights on subjects, making them pop against the background.

Tips for Capturing Stunning Golden Hour Photos

  • Plan Ahead: Check the sunset time for your location. Arrive early to set up and get comfortable with the surroundings.

  • Experiment with Angles: Try different angles to see how the light interacts with your subjects. Sometimes, a slight change in position can create a dramatic effect.

  • Use Reflectors: If you have a reflector, use it to bounce light onto your subjects. This can help fill in shadows and add more light to their faces.

  • Adjust Your Settings: Be ready to adjust your camera settings as the light changes. Golden hour light can shift quickly, so stay alert.

Capturing the Essence of Golden Hour

Golden hour is not just about the light; it’s about the emotions it evokes. The warmth of the sun can create a sense of nostalgia and joy. This is why many photographers cherish this time.

Creating Lasting Memories

When you capture images during golden hour, you’re not just taking pictures. You’re creating memories that last a lifetime. The soft light can enhance the emotions in your photos, making them feel more intimate and personal. This is something that your family can always look back on. Trust me your kids will love looking at the photos.

The Importance of Connection

During golden hour, the connection between subjects can shine through. Whether it’s a family, a couple, or friends, the golden light can highlight their bond. This is what makes golden hour photography so special. And I'm all about connction, not stiff poses.
